Altona North Library – Centre of Excellence Refurbishment

Client: Hobsons Bay City Council
Location: Altona North Library
Budget: $1.1 million
Builder: Alchemy Construct

Paperarc partnered with Hobsons Bay City Council to transform the Altona North Library into a vibrant, future-focused Games Discovery Centre. This was carried out as a part of the Council+ strategy to reimagine libraries as Centres of Excellence.

The upgrade introduces a dynamic new space dedicated to all types of gaming, from consoles and PCs to traditional board and role-playing games, within the heart of the community library. By integrating gaming into the library experience, the design celebrates creativity, teamwork, and digital literacy, offering something for every age and interest.

The once underused meeting rooms and corridors along the library’s southern edge were reimagined as a flexible, open Games Discovery Centre, creating a more welcoming and engaging environment. The result is a space that feels inclusive, playful, and connected, a true reflection of Altona North’s diverse community.

Extensive stakeholder consultation and community input shaped the final outcome, ensuring the design delivered both functionality and wow-factor. Alongside a refreshed courtyard and a new meeting pod, the upgraded library now stands as a model for how libraries can evolve into social and creative hubs for the future.
